Taking in a movie with the family is a great way to spend some time together over the holiday season.

But whether it's a festive feature or the latest blockbuster, ploughing through all the latest film trailers to pick out the right flick can be a bit daunting. Below are some of the family movies that will be showing in wide release in cinemas across the UK during December.

Megamind (in 2D and 3D)

Bringing together the vocal talents of three of Hollywood's hottest properties, Megamind tells the story of an evil genius, voiced by Will Ferrell, who creates his own hero Titan (Jonah Hill) to fight when he finally vanquishes his nemesis Metro Man (Brad Pitt). However, when this new challenge turns bad, Megamind must become the good guy and save the world.

Megamind is in cinemas now.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2D and 3D)

The third cinematic entry in the Chronicles of Narnia series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was a movie that very nearly didn't make it to the screen. Following Disney's decision to pull out of the franchise, production responsibilities were handed over to Fox and now, fans will finally get to see what happens to Prince Caspian and the children who visit his fantasy kingdom.

Animals United

For kids and families that loved Madagascar, Over the Hedge and Chicken Little, Animals United could be an absolute no brainer. Originally a German release, this animated film has been re-voiced by British favourites including Stephen Fry, Dawn French, Jim Broadbent and Billie Piper - to name just a few.

Animals United is in cinemas from December 17th

Fred: The Movie

If you don't know who Fred is, chances are your children will. This YouTube sensation has been a big hit on the internet and has now made his way on to the silver screen. The story follows Fred's as he tries to make the girl next door, played by the one and only Pixie Lott, fall for him. Don't expect the film reviews to be particularly kind to this one, but chances are many kids will already be in love with it - even before they've had chance to see it.

Gulliver's Travels (2D and 3D)

With an all new take on the classic adventure story of a travel writer's adventures in a world where everyone is only a few inches tall, Jack Black is back in Gulliver's Travels. Many will have already seen the special Orange film trailers for this before the main features in cinemas up and down the country, but for those who haven't, it certainly looks like the star is on incredible form.
