With Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World still in the doghouse over allegations of hacking into mobile phones belonging to celebrities, Hugh Grant has tossed his two cents into the case, after he got his own back on a paparazzo who had taken pictures of him.
Seizing the chance of writing an article for his former girlfriend Jemima Khan in The New Statesman, Grant decided to wreak his revenge by paying a visit to a member of the paparazzi elite who had previously helped him out after his car broke down in a country lane. The pap in question was kept anonymous in Grant’s write up, but it proved to be an interesting insight into the hidden world of obtaining a tabloid scoop.
Celebrity news outlets have reported that there are at least over 90 celebrities who are pursuing the paper after they found out that their phones were tapped by journalists and private investigators by the Sunday tabloid newspaper.
This isn’t the first time Grant has been in the headlines. The actor is publicly known for being arrested in America in 1995 during a vice operation after being caught flagging the attention of a lady of the night, Divine Brown. The actor said two weeks after the incident that, "I think you know in life what's a good thing to do and what's a bad thing, and I did a bad thing. And there you have it".
Though suffering an embarrassing dip in his career, he dusted the scandal off his shoulder and continued to star in rom-com after rom-com, with his most critically acclaimed appearance coming in the 2002 smash hit comedy, About A Boy.
Renowned for playing a bumbling Englishman, it could be said that the Statesman exposé he carried out was out of character, but he definitely has uncovered serious shortcomings in the journalistic practices of certain newspapers.
The English actor has also been a staple in the celebrity gossip columns after having public relationships with a number of high profile actresses, with Jemima Khan being a former beau.
There has yet to be any reaction to his exposé, but one thing can be said for sure, Hugh Grant would never have been considered to have been the person to blow yet another whistle in the ever-growing phone hacking scandal. Grant joins a long line of celebrity activists getting his own back on the people who make it their duty to invade every aspect of their lives to make a profit.
